If the Surrey Spitfire 20 is too close for a long run before Spring marathons, the week after you’ve got 15 and 21-mile races in Cranleigh, Surrey. Another beaut of a local race (the kind where you can tuck into homemade cakes in a village hall when you finish) entries close on 12 March and cost the princely sum of £12-£14 payable by bank transfer or cheque. Our top tip, run near the centre of the road where you can, the camber can be a bit of a killer.

Jack The Ripper Run

Jack the ripper

31 March, from 18.00, £15
Near Liverpool Street
secretlondonruns.com

We’ve not been along to a Secret London Runs event before but this sounds rather splendid. It’s 1888 and five women have been murdered by the Ripper. Working together in teams of up to four, runners race against the clock to solve the crimes, interviewing suspects, visiting the scenes of gruesome acts and trying to catch the dastardly Jack. Enter as a group or buy a social ticket and be put into a team with other runners.
