The month in sweat: January

Sorry, we’re a bit late posting this but we’ve been too busy breaking New Year’s resolutions. Anyway, yoga on the London Eye, free cycling, Beyonce v Rihanna workshops, strongwoman training and much more. January is looking swell.

Now we haven’t tried this yet but our friend Sam from the gym loves it (she’s a strong lady) and we’re going to go and check it out this month for defs. Modified strongman training for women, sessions take place every Saturday morning in Rosslyn Park Rugby Club, Barnes. Photos suggest sleds, battle ropes, tyres and other such paraphenalia. My arms are made of string, I think I’m going to die.

The cool Shoreditch-based indoor cycling studio is opening a new studio in Holborn next week and we’ve heard a rumour they’ll be offering free classes until the end of the month. More news about this is to be announced next week but we reckon you can expect some great, fun cycling classes, amazing instructors (including our mate Shara), disco lights, banging tunes and sweat. Lots of sweat. We’re going to the launch on Monday, we’ll report back!

Yoga with amazing views over London? Sounds good to us. You may not have known (we didn’t) but the London Eye closes for maintenance in early January. To celebrate the reopening on 18 Jan the Eye is hosting something called ‘Lift London’ where ticket holders can get a FREE upgrade to four different New Year experiences taking place in the capsules. Choose from:

Mind: learn relaxing medication techniques with the ‘Heruka Centre’
Body: yoga with Danai Kougiouli
Soul: artist Melissa Scott-Miller gives tips on creating landscape works of art
Career: Zoe Griffin, author of Get Rich Blogging talks about taking your passion and turning it into a source of income

Having a dry January? Doesn’t mean you can’t pretend you’re in a hot club. Learn killer dance moves from two of the world’s greatest pop divas and have a bit of a dance-off. There’s a beginner’s workshop too if you want to take things at a slightly slower pace. Oh, and Frame are also hosting a Hot Heels dance workshop on 25 Jan, where you learn to dance in heels. It’s open to men as well, and yes they have to wear heels! Should be hilarious.

This sounds ace. A fortnightly meet up for female cyclists who want to build their confidence riding on the road, meet new people to ride with and improve their road safety knowledge.

Rides will build from 45 minutes to 2 hours over 10 meetings and there’ll also be a bit of training in cycle mechanics, sports nutrition and endurance training, as well as jolly bike rides and cake consumption. Led by cycle lovers Hannah and Louise, the 10 meetings have been funded by Harrow council but if it’s a success, who knows where it could lead!

Iceman, off-road duathlon and trail running event
25 January
Run £27, duathlon £49, relay £62

Think you’re hard? This is the event for you – mud, hills, bikes, icy water, wicked! Choose from an off-road duathlon (10k run, 18k mountain bike, 5k run) or trail run (11k or 16k options). If you want to share the pain you can enter the duathlon as a relay team.

We love hotpod, heated yoga in specially designed inflatable pop-up pods (it feels a bit like doing yoga in a puffa jacket). This month the hotpod guys have expanded their offering and are now running classes daily in a number of locations. Check them out, lovely, friendly guys and great classes, plus, if you look carefully you can spot me (Charlotte) on their website photography – those are my legs on the landing page, and I’m being manhandled in the pic above, fame at last!
