In among the marathon madness and chocolate eggs there are loads of sweaty fitness shenanigans going on this month. Here are the best April fitness events in town.
From 3-26 April, early mornings, lunchtimes and evenings
Old Spitalfields Market
The sun’s out and Spitalfields are celebrating with a fitness frenzy. All month, they’re hosting free sessions in the middle of the marketplace and they’ve got a load of great fitness providers on board. Classes include HIIT with FitMiBody, Reformer Pilates with Boot Camp Pilates, Boxing with Arches Gym, nutrition talks, Fitness First sessions, beginners Muay Thai and loads more. There’s also a pop up health bar to refuel after (or, you know, you can stuff your face with street food instead).
GoodGym Fitness 4 All
Thursday 6, 13 and 20 April, Clapham Common
Light nights mean more outdoor fitness sessions, hurrah! And this month GoodGym have free hour-long classes aimed specifically at runners. There’ll be running form drills, running specific strength and conditioning work – and hey, even a bit of running. It doesn’t matter whether you’re training for your 75th marathon or you’ve just run your first mile, as the name suggests, everyone’s welcome.
Alternate Saturdays from 8 April, 9am and 10am, £35 including brunch
Haymarket Hotel, Charing Cross
FloatFit is one of those classes that’s particularly good fun with friends, as you’re probably going to face plant and it’s rude to laugh at strangers. In the 30-minute yoga class you’ll Chaturanga and downward dog on big AquaBase boards in the Haymarket hotel pool. Just trying to stand up works your balance and strength so wait till you get on to those one-legged poses. Afterwards there’s an Instagram-worthy Recovery Brunch with dishes including waffles with banana and strawberries; sweetcorn chilli fritters; avo and eggs. Hello.
Brooks Bra Fitting and Advice Day
The Running Works, EC3A
If you run and you’ve got boobs you need a decent sports bra. Not sure whether that greying number you’ve had since sixth form is up to the job? Book yourself in for a free fitting, there’s a buy one get one half price offer on Brooks bras as well, which is good because sports bra engineering don’t come cheap.
Victoria Park Easter Run
14 April, from £16, 09:30
It’s Good Friday, so you’re going to have a good race right? Tackle 5k, 10k or a half marathon distance as you run laps around Vicky Park. Eat chocolate after, delight in your lovely medal complete with bunny and eggs.
The Chocolate Run!
15 April, 12:00, from £25.02
Secret London location
Chocolate? Running? Throw some booze in there and you’ve pretty much got our dream day. This event from DeadDrop Fitness is a kind of mad Easter Egg Hunt. The premise is that evil thieves have stolen chocolate from the Easter bunny and you need to run either 5-8k or 10k (there are two distance options) to find it. There’s free chocolate on route, you get a free Easter egg at the end, if you’ve got kids you can take them for free, plus you get a medal. Oh and you know that booze thing we mentioned, they go to the pub after!
Heavy Metal Yoga
Every Friday from 21 April, 08:00, free for Gymbox members, £20 for non-members
Because nothing says namaste like a blast of Iron Maiden. Ticket marketplace StubHub have got together with Gymbox to launch a rocking alternative to the whale song soundtracks usually associated with yoga. You’ll be getting your warrior on to Metallica, headbanging into headstand and we’re presuming Savasana will be accompanied by the Grateful Dead. Yes, it’s all a bit of a gimmick but come on, it sounds like fun.
HulaFitness Masterclass (80s and 90s)
22 April, 13:00, from £6.96
Hugh Cubbit Centre, Kings Cross
‘You spin me right round baby right round‘, they’ve got to play that right? This hula hooping class is set to the songs of the 80s and 90s so you can relieve your childhood/teenage years as you spin. Your instructor is Anna Bryne, aka the Hulagan, who once taught me the coolest and simplest hula hoop trick known to man, it involves flicking the hoop off your leg and onto your arm –promise it’s better than it sounds. You’ll learn some hula sequences as well as getting a damn good core workout, and there’s a free goody bag from organisers fitness event company Ad Virtus UK too (vegan marshmallow company Freedom Mallows are one of the goody bag sponsors, they’re worth the entry fee alone those things).
A Year of Beautiful Eating: Talk and Book Signing with Madeline Shaw
26 April, 18:30, £21.83
Whole Foods Market, High Street Kensington
Is beautiful eating the new clean eating? We’re not sure but Madeline Shaw’s got a new book of simple and nutritious recipes out, and she’s doing a talk and Q&A all about the benefits of eating with the seasons to celebrate. The price includes a signed copy of the book, rrp £20, and refreshments, so if you were thinking of buying it anyway then it’s definitely worth popping along.
Laura Kennington – Overcoming Adventure Challenges
26 April, 18.30, £7
Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports, Covent Garden
Like your fitness with a big old dollop of adventure thrown in? Good. Get along to this then. Adventurer Laura, who’s recently cycled around Ireland and paddled the Thames, is leading an outdoor Trail Fit fitness session to celebrate the launch of the new women’s specific shoe from outdoor brand KEEN. Back at the store she’ll talk you through how adventures can help improve your confidence and your mind set. We’re not quite sure what the £7 is for but hey ho we might just go along and find out.
28-30 April, from £11.50
Business Design Centre, Islington
The health and fitness festival for women is back (it’s a bit like the Clothes Show live but sweatier). There’s a fitness studio with loads of classes including HIIT sessions with Clean Eating Alice, Barry’s Bootcamp sessions, Beyonce dance workshops from Frame, yoga, F45 classes and loads of other shizzle. Talks on building a business in fitness, Q&As with insta-fitness stars including Joe Wicks and loads of stalls full of healthy food brands and cool fitness wear. To be honest, we mainly go for the free tasters on the food stands.
Odlo Run Club
Every Wednesday from 3 May, 19:00
Snow & Rock, Covent Garden
It’s not till the beginning of May but that’s nearly April so we’re including it in this month’s round up anyway. The free Odlo run club is back for the summer with 5k and 8k options weekly, 20% off Odlo kit and special guests. If you attend nine out of the 12 runs you bag yourself a free running top as well.
