It’s August, everyone’s away and there’s a bank holiday coming up. No excuse for not getting your fit on though, loads of brilliant events are happening this month. Check ’em out.
Yoga in the Walkways
17 August, 07:30, £25
Tower Bridge Exhibition
At the time of writing there was only one place left on this sunrise yoga class, taking place on the glass floors of Tower Bridge 42-metres above the Thames. Don’t worry if you don’t get on though, starting with this class on 17 August, vinyasa-flow sessions will now be taking place monthly. Just keep your eyes peeled and book on as soon as the next one’s announced – they always sell out fast.
Bootcamp Yoga and Picnic in the Park
Every Thursday in August, 18:30
Join Good Yoga Life every Thursday for what sounds like a tough class in the park (weather permitting). This isn’t your standard yoga class, Bootcamp Yoga combines cardio sequences, yoga moves and a high-energy playlist. Apparently it’s perfect if you like HIIT and circuits. If you want to hang out after, take a picnic and chill – surely no one will object to a bottle of prosecco either? Reserve a mat here or take your own.
New lululemon athletica store opens
Old Spitalfields Market
There’s a new Lululemon store in town, which means two things. 1. You’ll be tempted by pricey but really good quality workout gear. 2. Free yoga classes in store every Sunday morning at 10.30am yay!
Nike Unlimited You
19-21 August, various times, £25
Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane
Well, Nike don’t usually charge for events so this has to be pretty special. A ground-breaking (their words, not ours) high-intensity workout, there isn’t all that much information out there yet. But, basically, in your 2.5-hour slot you’ll be put through two challenging workouts, either a KoBox class followed by a challenging Nike Run Club session or a Barry’s Bootcamp treadmill class followed by a Nike Training Club session. This being Nike though, that’s not all. The workouts are set to a bespoke track by the blokes from Hot Chip and the rooms are bathed in immersive light installations. It’s bound to be fab anyway, Nike always give good event.
Yoga at Camden Beach
Saturday 20 August and 27 August, 09:45, £12
The Roundhouse, Camden
There’s a beach on top of the Roundhouse and they’re doing yoga! The 90-minute social classes are put on by Time Out and Creative Yoga London, plus you get a free juice after. My flatmate went last year and said it was great.
Britney Toxic Workshop
20 August, 14:00, £25
Frame, Kings Cross
Give instructor Cassius just two hours of your time and he’ll have you dancing around like Toxic-era Britney. Learn all the moves to the classic tune, don’t care if you look like a dick and you’ll have a wicked laugh and work out without realising. No dance experience or sequinned body stockings required.
Lorna Jane Empowering Women Event: Abolishing Negative Body Image
21 August, 11:00, £32.14
Lorna Jane store, Covent Garden
The second empowering women event from Lorna Jane UK, expect discussions from Fempower founder, Melissa Weldon, and Be Real campaigner Philippa Lewis about abolishing negative body beliefs and promoting body positivity. Once you’re all fired up and feeling fabulous, Melissa is leading an outdoor HIIT session, followed by protein smoothies. Ticket proceeds go to the Be Real charity – all about campaigning for body confidence – and attendees get a jam-packed goody bag – apparently it’s worth 50 smackers.
Adidas Runners London – Pure Boost X Takeover
23 August, 19:00
To celebrate the launch of the new women’s only Pure Boost X shoes, Adidas are holding a special London event. Guest instructors – including Adrienne who you may well know from Instagram, and Adidas run leader Olivia – will take you through an exclusive workout in a West London studio before it’s time to trial the shoes with a 5k run through the streets, followed by refreshments and live music at the Oxford Street store. Places are very limited (only 20 places but you get to take a mate) so attendees will be drawn out of a hat on 19 August. Sign up before then if you fancy your chances.
Disco Aerobics and Yoga on the Beach
Until 27 August. Yoga, Tuesday, 20:00; Aerobics, Saturday, 10:00, £10
Brixton Beach Boulevard
Another city beach – this time on a rooftop in the middle of Brixton market. Brixton Beach Boulevard is all decked out like 1950s Miami, which is pretty cool, and they also hold disco-themed exercise classes – because why not? We tried out disco aerobics the other day and, while it wasn’t the hardest workout ever, it was certainly a lot of sequin-spangled fun. Plus you got some free watermelon juice after. You should also check out the place for drinks and food if you haven’t been yet, they’ve got a nightclub and private rooms done up like 1950s motel rooms. We like it.
Yoga Supper Club on Good Ship Benefit
23 August, 18:30, £35
Good Ship Benefit, Victoria Embankment
You’ve done it on a rooftop, you’ve done it up the Shard, now it’s time to take your yoga practice to the water with this one-hour Vinyasa-flow session on the top deck of Good Ship Benefit – the boat brought to you by Benefit Cosmetics. Afterwards there’s a mainly vegan three-course supper, a glass of prosecco (good) and of course views across the Thames.
London Midnight Runners Carnival Music Run
26 August, 19:30, run is free, after-party tickets start at £5
Ladbroke Grove tube station
Yay, it’s carnival time and London Midnight Runners are celebrating in the best way. With a run and a party. Meet to run 10k around Notting Hill with five carnival-themed exercise stops along the way. There’ll be Samba tunes as you run around and an after-party at the Mode Club – where Carnival dress is pretty much a pre-requisite. Buy your after-party ticket here.
Runthrough Brixton 10k
28 August, 09:30, £16
Brockwell Park, Herne Hill
I you fancy seeing out the month with a 10k try this one. Brockwell is my local park and it’s a very nice (albeit deceptively hilly) one, plus the medal is in the shape of Brixton Academy. Pretty cheap event with donations towards local charity The Seaver Foundation for socially excluded children. Flapjack when you finish, bonus!
Look out for these early September events:
Secret London Runs: 10k Secret Mission
3 September, 12:00-14:00 start, from £12
Secret EC1 location
A 10k team challenge with a bit of puzzle solving thrown in, sounds good to us. Based in the murky London past, teams of four are briefed by an 18th-century policeman. The mission – to collect vital clues, interrogate witnesses and hunt down suspects on the mean streets of the capital. The team who solve the criminal mystery in the fastest time are crowned winners.
The Color Run presented by Skittles
4 September, 11:00, £26
The O2, Greenwich
Run 5k around the O2 pelting your mates with coloured paints, charge through Colour Stations where other people throw powder paint at you, join in the massive after party where you dance to music and get pelted with even more paint. Great fun, great photo opps – and we’ve also got 10 FREE places to give away if you’re quick, competition closes 23:59 on Tuesday 16 August.
